      Delhi shivered again this morning when the temperature plummeted to 4.2°C. Base observatory at Safdarjung reported a steep fall of more than 3°C since yesterday and envelope of thick fog reducing visibility to 300mtr. The national capital Delhi can expect thick fog and rise of temperature by 3-4°C over the next 48 hours. In the wake of western disturbance, cold air will sweep again the plains of North India and reach Delhi and beyond.

      The minimum temperature has plunged in Delhi by about 3°C since yesterday bringing a fresh spell of cold wave. Base observatory Safdarjung recorded low of 4.3°C as against 7°C on Monday sneaking cold wave over most parts in the neighbourhood. Lohri and Makar Sankranti on 13th January and 14th January 2021 is likely to experience severe cold wave with minimum temperature dropping further.

      After the end of rain in the plains and snowfall in the hills, the outbreak of icy winds is now seen in the plains states of North India. In Punjab, Haryana, North East Rajasthan, Western Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, day temperatures have witnessed a sharp drop in several places during the last 24 to 48 hours. The maximum temperature in most cities was recorded at 5 to 10 degrees Celsius below normal, leading to cold day conditions during the day.

      The icy cold northwesterly winds will not continue for long and temperatures will not witness a significant drop for north-west India including Delhi. We expect temperatures across Northern Plains and western parts of the country to drop by January 10th. North-west India will not witness chilling cold until January 10 or 11. Temperatures will fall over north-west India but it will not be a steep drop. Chance of cold wave or severe cold wave to make a comeback seems to be slim.

      Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 5.3°C this morning, 3°C below the normal. This is for the 8th consecutive day that the base observatory Safdarjung has recorded single-digit minimum from 15th December to 22nd December. Delhi will experience drop in the night temperature for the next 3 days. Cold wave conditions will come up again with temperature 4-5°C below the average.

      The day temperature in Delhi hovered around 20°C for the first time in this season to record a maximum of 20.7°C on 13th December. This temperature is 3°C below the normal and Palam observatory plunged further to 5°C below normal recording 18.2°C. The minimum temperature also slipped to a single digit for the second time in the month to register 8.4°C and 9.4°C respectively.

      Delhi NCR is likely to have rain and showers on December 11th night and 12th morning. This may break the jinx of the dry spell so far being experienced in and around the national capital. Delhi is marked on the outer peripheral of the main weather system bringing rains over the northern plains of Punjab and Haryana. Therefore the rains will mostly be light and patchy in nature.

The frequency of dense fog hitting rail, road and air operations simultaneously is about 2, 4 and 2 days respectively in these months. Delhi and NCR are more prone to dense fog for 4, 8 and 6 days in December, January, and February respectively.

      Delhi Winters: The base observatory of Delhi, Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 10°C on 03rd November, which is the earliest at least since 1999 or even beyond. The minimum temperature for Delhi has been dropping for the last 3 consecutive days from 11.4° to 10.8° and today morning being 10°C. The minimum temperature for Delhi in November generally start with 15°C or above and drop to 10-11°C during last week.

While 01st November was the coldest on that date in the last more than 10 years, 02 November also repeat track to be the chilliest day at the start of the month. The month of November has an average minimum temperature of 16°C to start and about 10°C to finish with good chances to score single digit on many occasions.

      Delhi looks like heading for pleasant days with a gradual drop in the maximum and minimum temperatures. Average monthly temperature for Delhi in October as per base observatory Safdarjung is 32.8 degrees and 19.1 degrees respectively. There seems to be a significant drop of more than 5 degrees in the minimum and marginal dip of 1 degree in the maximum.

      By mid of October, the number of stubble burning incidents will increase significantly over Punjab and Haryana. These smoke particles will be carried by westerly and northwesterly winds towards Delhi NCR, leading to an increase in air pollution and air quality over Delhi NCR. Due to low wind speed and drop in temperature, the air becomes heavy and sink over a settlement, leading to the formation of a thick blanket of smog.

      Delhi NCR is likely to experience dry weather conditions for the week commencing 07th September. In the absence of seasonal rains, the temperatures will rise to reach the high 30's during the second half of the week. Patchy rains are expected on Sunday, 06th September which might as well spill over to morning hours on Monday, 07th September.
