Delhi shivered again this morning when the temperature plummeted to 4.2°C. Base observatory at Safdarjung reported a steep fall of more than 3°C since yesterday and envelope of thick fog reducing visibility to 300mtr. The national capital Delhi can expect thick fog and rise of temperature by 3-4°C over the next 48 hours. In the wake of western disturbance, cold air will sweep again the plains of North India and reach Delhi and beyond.

After the end of rain in the plains and snowfall in the hills, the outbreak of icy winds is now seen in the plains states of North India. In Punjab, Haryana, North East Rajasthan, Western Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, day temperatures have witnessed a sharp drop in several places during the last 24 to 48 hours. The maximum temperature in most cities was recorded at 5 to 10 degrees Celsius below normal, leading to cold day conditions during the day.

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 5.3°C this morning, 3°C below the normal. This is for the 8th consecutive day that the base observatory Safdarjung has recorded single-digit minimum from 15th December to 22nd December. Delhi will experience drop in the night temperature for the next 3 days. Cold wave conditions will come up again with temperature 4-5°C below the average.

On average, Delhi records 13 days of fog (visibility < 1000 metres) in December. Fog peaks in January with 19 days and drops again to 10 days in February. The frequency of dense fog hitting rail, road and air operations simultaneously is about 2, 4 and 2 days respectively in these months. Delhi and NCR are more prone to dense fog for 4, 8 and 6 days in December, January, and February respectively.

Delhi Winters: The base observatory of Delhi, Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 10°C on 03rd November, which is the earliest at least since 1999 or even beyond. The minimum temperature for Delhi has been dropping for the last 3 consecutive days from 11.4° to 10.8° and today morning being 10°C. The minimum temperature for Delhi in November generally start with 15°C or above and drop to 10-11°C during last week.

Delhi recorded the lowest minimum temperature of this season clicking 10.8°C and beating the previous daily record. While 01st November was the coldest on that date in the last more than 10 years, 02 November also repeat track to be the chilliest day at the start of the month. The month of November has an average minimum temperature of 16°C to start and about 10°C to finish with good chances to score single digit on many occasions.

By mid of October, the number of stubble burning incidents will increase significantly over Punjab and Haryana. These smoke particles will be carried by westerly and northwesterly winds towards Delhi NCR, leading to an increase in air pollution and air quality over Delhi NCR. Due to low wind speed and drop in temperature, the air becomes heavy and sink over a settlement, leading to the formation of a thick blanket of smog.

Delhi NCR is likely to experience dry weather conditions for the week commencing 07th September. In the absence of seasonal rains, the temperatures will rise to reach the high 30&#039;s during the second half of the week. Patchy rains are expected on Sunday, 06th September which might as well spill over to morning hours on Monday, 07th September.
